September 7, 2024

Hello Glenbrook,

I hope you have had a lovely week -- especially for those going back to school, or back to teaching, or shifting into a new season in any way! September always feels like a restart in the year, which is probably because I've been doing school for like 30 years and my mind is so used to it ha ha. Pastor Ian will be with us this Sunday, going back to the Sermon on the Mount series that he did over the summer with one final look at the passage. After that, he will be on his way out East for a few weeks of vacation, where we will be blessed with Victor preaching again on September 15th and 22nd. I have lots of stuff for you to check out this week, so without further ado...the announcements!

Happy 99th Birthday Margaret!
Our dear friend Margaret M. celebrated a huge milestone this week. Let's join in the celebration of our dear friend and prayer warrior as she celebrates turning 99! God is good, and we are lucky to have her in our lives.

Communion Sunday
This Sunday, Pastor Ian will lead us in the sacrament of Holy Communion. If you are watching from home, please have some cracker/bread and juice/wine ready to join with us and celebrate the sacrifice of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

The Open Door Lunch
Wow! What a huge success. Thank you to all of the cooks, servers, drivers, organizers, and volunteers who helped make this Open Door lunch happen. The need in the community is rising, especially as we move from summer into the colder months. Glenbrook will be continuing to support the Open Door with three more lunches in the fall months. Please keep an eye out for sign up sheets and recipe cards next month! We couldn't do this without your love and support.

Indwell Update
We are so thankful that by the fall of 2024, Indwell will be supporting people in over 108 homes here in Mississauga as they celebrate the official Grand opening of the Cornerstone Suites building in Streetsville next week!

They will be holding a combined Grand Opening/Hope & Homes 50th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, September 12th

Drop in between 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm for this outdoor tented event at 263 Victoria Street, Mississauga.

Light refreshments, snacks and cake will be served.

Please check out this new video update to see what's going on: https://youtu.be/pTpNKdltuvE

ESL
We were blown away last year at how many members of the community reached out and were regular members of the ESL program. Glenbrook’s ESL program begins again this week and continues every Tuesday morning at 9:30. Please help spread the word to friends and neighbours who might share the info with prospective students.

It’s free, friendly, helpful and fun!

Thinking In Jazz
Knox College is featuring the 2024 MacDonald Lecture on the road at St. Andrew's King Street on Monday September 23 from 10AM - 330PM. The workshop will be led by The Rev. Dr. Brian Fraser and is entitled "Thinking in Jazz about Church Leadership". The workshop is FREE through the generosity of the family of the late Rev. Dr. Charles H. MacDonald.

In the evening at 7PM, Knox College has commissioned the Tom Reynolds Trio to create a Jazz Suite called "The Mustard Seed Suite" based on the Parable of the Mustard Seed at 7PM. Educational resources are being developed to accompany the suite as a future Ministry Forum offering. Donations to offset some expenses are gratefully accepted (though not required or receiptable) for the concert and can be made on the evening at the door or through the registration process on Eventbrite.

Here are the links to register and spread the word:

The Forge
If you are looking for a night out, our friend Margaret LP suggested going to see The Forge in theatres! A year out of high school with no plans for his future, Isaiah is challenged by his single mom and a successful businessman to start charting a better course for his life. Through the prayers of his mother and biblical discipleship from his new mentor, Isaiah begins to discover God’s purpose for his life is so much more than he could hope for or imagine.

A Night of Worship
Elias Dummer of The City Harmonic will lead worship nights in Toronto, Cambridge, Hamilton, and Ottawa this September and will donate a portion of ticket sales to support the work of Shalem! For every ticket purchased using the links below, $5 will be donated directly to Shalem. Shalem Mental Health Network is the organization I worked at for 8 months in my final psychotherapy placement at Knox, so it has a special place in my heart and makes a MASSIVE impact on the community.

As a non-profit organization, donations such as these cover a portion of its operating costs, helping to keep its various mental health programs affordable and accessible for everyone. This is a special way to enjoy a night of worship and music and to support mental health!

Bible Study – October 1st
I know it seems kind of far away. But September is going to be moving fast, and it will be here before you know it! If you are interested in joining our Tuesday morning bible study, mark your calendar. We will let you know closer to which study we will be focusing on for the fall season.

Christianity Explored – October 3rd
After an incredible course run this summer, we are once again going to be offering the Christianity Explored in the fall. This is a great course for anyone who is questioning their faith, looking to get a better understanding of Christianity, considering Christianity, or would like to go back to the basics in their own faith. This is also a great course for those considering baptism into the faith. Please let me know if you are interested in signing up, and we will give you all the course information closer to!

Accommodations Needed
If you or someone you know has knowledge of a room, an apartment, or some kind of affordable living space available for rent please let me know. We have several folks in the congregation looking for living accommodation and we'd love to pair them up with someone in need of a roommate or a tenant.

September Schedule of Volunteers
Please let me know if there are dates which you are unavailable in the fall season.
